Biography

Dr. Zhang earned his MD in 1992 and PhD in 2002 with honors from China Medical University. Upon completing his internship and residency, he began his specialized training in 1997 at the department of thoracic surgery in China Medical University Cancer Hospital, China. At the end of 2003, he obtained the postdoctoral fellowship to work at the department of cardiothoracic surgery in Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. After obtaining Swedish Medical License, he began serving at the department of cardiothoracic surgery in Karolinska University Hospital in 2009 and later in Uppsala University Hospital in 2010. He returned to China in 2012 and served as director of the department of cardiothoracic surgery at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Now he is the director of the department of cardiothoracic & Vascular surgery at the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Dr. Zhang practices all aspects of thoracic surgery but has specials interest and experience in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, lung surgery and heart and lung transplantation. As a meticulous surgeon, Dr. Zhang is greatly respected for his relentless effort in introducing new technology and techniques to provide the level best care for his patients.


Dr. Zhang’s research interest focuses upon the ischemia-reperfusion injury that occurs when lung transplantation activates the innate immune system to induce inflammation.
