He has served successively as an assistant professor of the Department of Human Pathology at the National University of Tokushima in Japan, and a postdoctoral researcher at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute of Harvard Medical School. Up to now, he has supervised dozens of Ph.D. and postdoctoral fellows.

Zhirong Qian is a member of the International Molecular Pathology Epidemiology Committee, a director of the Japanese Endocrine Pathology Society, an editorial board of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Pathology, deputy editor of Chronic Diseases and Translational Medicine, and a consultant specialised in molecular oncology and immunotherapy at the Chinese Research Hospital committee. In recent years, he has chaired and participated in many NIH/NCI and Harvard University research funds, with a total amount of over 100 million dollars. He also provided quality papers to several internationally renowned academic journals of oncology where a total of 120 SCI papers are published with total impact factors of more than 1000. Among these papers, more than 20 pieces of IF≥20 articles are published by including NEJM, Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Genetics, JAMA, JCO, Gastroenterology, Gut, JAMA Oncology and Cancer Discover, being referenced more than 5500 times as well. Explicitly, he as the first author, the correspondence author, the co-first author, the co-senior author, and the senior author has 48 SCI papers published, including eight papers with IF≥ 10 and two papers with IF≥ 20. For these reasons, he has been awarded with many academic honours at both the national and worldwide level.

Researcher Qian's expertise lies in the application and analysis of large epidemiological databases, the collection, construction and analysis of large clinical materials, second-generation gene sequencing and analysis, molecular pathology, tumour molecular biology, anticancer drug target discovery and drug development, and surgical pathology.
