Professor Capecchi- the Nobel Prize winner Honoured as Honorary Professor in the Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University

On December 6, the Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University had the honor of hosting a meeting with Mario R. Capecchi, the winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, a member of Nation Academy of Sciences, a member of European Academy of Sciences and a professor at University of Utah School. Professor Capecchi on this visit discussed further collaboration including academic exchanges and scientific research. The heads of the Hospital also joined this discussion, including Yulong He, President of the Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Vice President Changhua Zhang, Yihang Pan and Wenbin Deng, the Dean of the School of Pharmacy of Sun Yat-sen University (Shenzhen). The researchers from the Scientific Research Center and experts from the clinical departments as well took in participation.

The Seventh Affiliated Hospital has been staying in communication and cooperation with Professor Capecchi on relevant affairs since the beginning of 2018. On this basis, our hospital and Professor Capecchi jointly discussed about the Nobel Laureate’s scientist research team and the Nobel Laureate Lab. Professor Capecchi expressed his confidence in the future cooperation and noted that he would contribute to apply innovation animal models in medical research domain. At the same time, he agreed with our hospital’s concept of “Scientific Research Leads to a Rapport Relationship with Clinical Practice”. Professor Capecchi suggested that young scholars and researchers have ambition in their research, stick to their scientific beliefs and keep working hard in a persistent way.

After the discussion, Professor Capecchi visited the Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University. Vice President Yihang Pan gave an introduction to the current development of scientific research and the second phase construction plan of the Seventh Affiliated Hospital. After that, Professor Capecchi got a further understanding of the laboratory equipment and research team of the Scientific Research Center and was notably impressed by the fruitful achievement on our scientific research. Additionally, Professor Capecchi was officially titled as an Honorary Professor in the Seventh Affiliated Hospital.

Professor Capecchi also visited the Digestive Medicine Center and gained information about the clinical progress and its current research situation. He highly appreciated the academic atmosphere established by the Digestive Medicine Center where regularly organizes Literature Reading Club and English Corner activities to keep abreast with the international medical frontier.

Our hospital is an integrated hospital embracing the full development of clinical medicine, scientific research and professional teaching. Simultaneously, there was the final of the First Young Teachers’ Teaching Competition on the visiting day. As a senior researcher and qualified educationalist, Professor Capecchi showed interested in this competition and was invited to award the prizes to our winning young teachers. Such academic event greatly encouraged confidence and passion in teaching among doctors in our hospital.
