The Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University held the sixth ‘Master Lecture’

On July 10, Dr. Otis Brawley and Dr. Xie Heng visited the Seventh Affiliated Hospital and gave presentations as speech guests in the sixth ‘Master Lecture’.

The ‘Master Lecture’ is an academic activity collaboratively organized by the Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University and the Health and Family Planning Commission of Guangming New District. This event aims at docking the frontier of international medical research, creating a high-end academic exchange platform and promoting the development of medicine. Since June 22, 2017, the hospital has successfully held five times ‘Master Lecture’. Each lecture invited people including Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, exceptional professors from ‘National 1000 People Plan’ and ‘Chang Jiang Scholars Program’.

 

Dr. Otis Webb Brawley is an American physician who serves as Chief Medical and Scientific Officer and Executive Vice President of the American Cancer Society. He is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology and is a Master of the American College of Physicians, Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine now known as the National Academy of Medicine.

 

Dr. Otis brought his topic: The Current States of Cancer in the United States and Future Prevention and Control

 

Dr. Xie Heng is an interdisciplinary-trained Senior Medical Officer & Program Director with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification and eighteen years of working experience in reviewing, evaluating and approving clinical trial concepts and protocols, and overseeing oncological drug development grants at the National Cancer Institute in the United States. He served as a regular member of the Data Safety Monitor Committee for the SWOG and ECOG-ACRIN supported clinical trials. He has excellent interpersonal soft skills and five years of Branch Chief and Medical Supervisory experience in leading people to achieve program goals at the National Institutes of Health in the United States.

Dr. Otis Brawley is not only an outstanding researcher but also an exceptional practitioner. He served as physician, oncologist and deputy director of oncology at the National Cancer Institute of the United States. On the other hand, Dr. Xie Heng, in addition to being a clinician, has chaired the SWOG and ECOG-ACRIN phase 1-3 clinical drug trials for many years. After the ‘Master Lecture’, Dr. Otis and Xie came to visit each clinical sector of our hospital and then paid great attention to the Digestive Diseases Medical Centre which is led by Professor He Yulong. During visiting this center, Vice President Zhang Changhua introduced the concepts and techniques of diagnosis and treatment in the Digestive Diseases Medical Centre. Both Dr. Otis and Xie unanimously showed agreement and praise. Later on, they discussed the future drug experiments and medical training. Both guests expressed they were furthering academic exchanges and cooperation.
