On October 18, the International Medical Center (“IMC”) of the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (“SAH-SYSU”) treated its first pediatric patient covered by commercial insurance, providing high-quality medical and nursing services while smoothly verifying and implementing the dual commercial insurance information and claims process for the child and their guardian.
As the living standards of China’s population continue to improve and as health awareness increases, the prevalence of commercial insurance is growing. More and more parents are securing a “comprehensive commercial insurance package” for their children from birth. However, children are considered legally incapacitated, and pediatric commercial insurance differs significantly from adult commercial insurance in terms of the service recipients, claims procedures, and communications, presenting certain challenges and difficulties for medical institutions that offer direct insurance payment.
To enhance service quality and patient satisfaction, IMC staff communicated repeatedly with the insurer before the child’s arrival to thoroughly understand their complaints and needs. Considering the child might have complex physical and psychological conditions, IMC invited Professor Chen Chun, SAH-SYSU Vice President and leader of the Pediatric Hematology-oncology Department, to conduct a detailed patient consultation and physical examination. Professor Chen provided clear answers to the family’s questions, alleviating their concerns about child health and offering thoughtful guidance on child-rearing. Director Xu Zuofeng from the Ultrasound Department was invited for an ultrasound consultation to provide professional treatment and psychological care. SAH-SYSU’s high-quality medical services and the comprehensive insurance direct payment process for commercial insurance claims were well received by the child’s family.

The IMC has established effective communication platforms with several insurers, offering direct payment services to simplify reimbursement for patients. This initiative enhances the medical experience for those with commercial insurance and provides high-quality health security services for the talents of Guangming Science City.
